Going Virtual: A Comedy in Three Acts

In their recent book "IT Risk: Turning Business Threats Into Competitive Advantage," George Westerman and Richard Hunter suggest that once you have successfully related the risks associated with the IT infrastructure to the business, you must fix the IT foundation. Also, whether tacit or explicit, the combination of Availability Management and IT Service Continuity Management into the same section (Section 6.3) of ISO/IEC 20000, the IT Service Management Standard, is an acknowledgement of the fact that you have to understand and be able to manage availability under normal conditions if you have any expectation of being able to manage it in extraordinary circumstances. You have to understand the relationships between the business services provided, their availability requirements, and the infrastructure components involved in delivering those services. Virtualization technologies provide both a valuable tool for reducing costs and mitigating risk and a significant challenge to keeping up with the expansion of your environment. Using a real-world example of taking a set of services from physical to virtual, Dennis Ravenelle sets-up today's presentations.

Rethinking IT for the 21st Century Using ITIL and IT Service Strategy to Optimize the IT Infrastructure and It’s Costs

The single largest challenge that today’s IT executives face is that they are caught between the conflicting mandates to cut costs yet meet business expectations for more value from technology. ITIL and IT Service management represent the only approach to both cut costs and shift IT investments to revenue-generating valued services. Development of an IT Service Portfolio using ITIL Service Strategy concepts is needed more now than ever to avoid the risk of across-the-board cost cutting which squeezes the IT organization and creates added risk but does nothing to grow revenue. This session will cover a practical 5-Step approach that attendees can start using the next day for quickly pulling their IT services and costs together to create transparency for cost optimization opportunities that can yield much larger savings than traditional cost cutting approaches.
